What’s this you say? A recipe on my blog?! Why, yes, yes it is!
I know, it’s been awhile since I’ve blogged at all, let alone a recipe but let me just tell you it’s taken a good six months for me to feel back to myself again. So, back to myself means lots of cooking and baking (so ready for holiday baking!) and trying new recipes!! I found this recipe on a new favorite blog, Bee in our Bonnet. I tested it out on our besties (thanks guys!) and it was a hit! (And yes, I take volunteers for testing!!)
I didn’t take step by step pics, but you can find them on the blog post here.
I started with thick bread – the package called it California Toast or something like that. It was super yum, and now I want to make all French Toast with it. I cut a small pocket in the bread with a bread knife. It was really hard! I ruined a lot of bread!!
Take your time, and go slow.
You need a whole block of cream cheese, for the filling. Leave it out on the counter for a couple of hours so it’s nice and soft. Mix with the zest of one orange, 2 tb of orange juice (I just squeezed it from the orange I zested) and 1 tb of sugar. (She said it was enough for 6 slices, but maybe I overstuffed because I got 5).
I used a pastry bag and a tip to fill it, and it worked great.
Feel free to use your own french toast batter recipe, but I just throw 3 eggs, a splash of milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a pie dish and mix.
I topped with bananas, powdered sugar and warm syrup. Side of potatoes and bacon! It was so yum!
I have to admit it was a BIG mess and a lot of work, but I think it’ll be easier next time. And seriously, it was so good, it was worth the trouble!
