Ha ha – clever, right?
Well, yes, we are adding on to our little family and 3 will become 4 in June.
Since quite a few people have asked “Was this a surprise!?” I’ll tell you the story. Here is your TMI warning – this may be girl talk! We definitely planned on having more children, but the plan was more like we’d work on that once Mattie turned one. However, if you know me at all, you know I am baby crazy and it wasn’t long before I started day dreaming of a nice big baby bump in Mattie’s First Birthday photos.
In Septmember, I started having some nausea and stomach aches (which reminded me of my morning sickness). I took two pregnancy tests and both were negative. I called my midwife, who told me that it could be normal for hormones regulating, however since I had my gallbladder out she wanted me to call my primary care doctor for a check up.
That doctor ran a blood panel to check my liver enzymes, among other things. While there, I told her I thought I was pregnant, but got negative tests. She decided to run a blood test, just in case. That one also came back negative.
It was then we kind of realized that having another baby wouldn’t be so bad! So, we got a little… irresponsible… in the baby making department. Now mind you, my period hadn’t come back yet so I had no clue when it would, when I would be fertile again and if I was even ovulating yet. There was definitely no trying, but there wasn’t a lot of “safety” either.
A month later, I was at the dentist office and I said to him “When I was pregnant with my son, I had a root canal and I felt so sick from the dentist having his hand in my mouth.” I was thinking “Kind of like I do right now…”
When I got home that afternoon, I couldn’t shake that feeling. The “this is way too familiar” feeling. So, I did it.. I peed on the stick. And just like with Matthew, that pink line came up within seconds, and dark! I seriously just laughed!
I went to Babies R Us to buy a “Big Brother” t-shirt for Mattie. I asked the guy, and he said “How old is the kid?” and I pointed to Matthew… “Um, 7 months”. What he said was “I am not sure they come that small!” but I am pretty sure he was thinking “Haven’t you heard of condoms?” ha ha
I found one, it was huge, and on clearance for $2. I got home and patiently waited for Scott to get home. When he did, I put Mattie on the floor and video tapped him “playing” while I watched for Scott to get the hint. It took about 20 minutes. I don’t know how I remained calm!
Scott was thrilled! I’m pretty sure his exact words were “Big Brother…. Seriously?… Wait, are you kidding?…. Babe!…. Cool!!” ha ha
Now, since everyone is wondering…. no, we are not stressed about this. We are not worried about it. We are not overwhelmed. If you know what I went through when my son was a newborn, it cannot possibly get worse than that. Having a lot of children is a dream come true for me, and I am very very rarely stressed out by my son. I am MORE stressed out when I am not with him. I know that having a 15 month old and a newborn will be challenging, but certainly not the most challenging thing I have done. Scott and I are a perfect team and we are thrilled to bring a newbie into our family.
We don’t care if it’s a boy or girl… in fact, we are kind of leaning boy! We know that having a boy will provide a best buddy and teammate for Matthew. We know that having a girl will be delightful and definitely want a daughter, so either way we will be happy. And we know that this is definitely NOT the last Rippey baby.
I am already spending plenty of time researching baby products to make life with two easier – you can bet I will LIVE in my Moby wrap. I have found the perfect stroller that I constantly just go stare at because I want it so badly. And I am searching for a convertible car seat that will fit in our teeny tiny Scion… otherwise, MiniVan here we come!
Thankfully, we planned ahead and we will have plenty of things for the new little one to be passed down from Matthew. Matthew just started sleeping in his room, so we have the cradle in our room ready for Newbie.
